Alcock And Brown Flight Recreation July 2005
On 2nd - 3rd July 2005, American Steve Fossett and co-pilot Mark Rebholz recreated the flight in a replica of the Alcock and Brown 'Vickers Vimy' aeroplane. They landed on the Connemara Golf Links course at Aillebrack, Ballyconneely. The replica Vimy was made from 4,130 steel tubes, 330 feet (100 meters) of box spars, 3,000 board feet (914 meters) of Douglas fir, 500 yards (457 meters) of aircraft-quality (90/inch thread count) Grade A cotton, 10,000 knots. Retired from flying , the replica is now on public display in the Museum's Bellman hangar but will be maintained to full airworthy standards.
