In 1882 during a drought a large eel like creature became stuck and died in a drain at Ballynahinch. The drain was over 18 inches ( 0.5 metres) in diameter. Ballynahinch Lake is a major salmon and trout lake, located beside the main Galway Road (N59) . It is a 7 minute drive from Clifden.
